Once again Center Moriches Firefighters responded to a mulch fire at Hampton Sand Company on Riverhead-Speonk Road.

Just before 8:30pm Friday evening Eastport firefighters responded to the Hampton Sand on Riverhead-Speonk Road. The Eastport Fire Chief arrived on scene with a fire that was much larger than previous fires and started calling for extra help. Within the first 2 hours of the fire over 30 departments were requested to assist at the fire scene.

Departments responded with engines, tankers, brush trucks and tower ladders to the mulch fire at the same property where a mulch fire kept firefighters busy this past Sunday afternoon.

Center Moriches firefighters were called to assist Eastport firefighters at 8:41p.m. The Tanker and Brush truck responded and firefighters spent all night helping to extinguish the flames.

Suffolk County 911 reports that many callers were reporting smoke as far north as Calverton and past Sound Avenue in Riverhead.

CMFD Firefighters were on scene in Eastport untill 6am Saturday morning.

According to Eastport Fire Officials, The fire involved a 30-foot high mulch pile, measured about 140,000 square feet at the base. Firefighters were on scene for 20 hours and trucked in approximately 2 million gallons of water using tanker trucks.

There were 2 firefighters from other departments who received minor injuries and were transported to PBMC for further evaluation.
