January 23, 2016

The National Weather Service in Upton NY has issued a blizzard watch for our area until 7am Sunday morning. Powerful winter storm Jonas will affect the region today into Sunday morning.

Heavy blowing snow and blizzard conditions are likely to bring accumulations of 1 to 2 Feet of snow for our area.

Northeast winds 30 To 40 Mph with gusting to 55 Mph. Visibilities will be one quarter mile or less at times and whiteout conditions are expected during the day today.

The strongest winds and heaviest snow will occur this morning into tonight. In addition the heavy snow and strong winds could bring down some tree limbs and cause scattered power outages.

This morning Supervisor Ed Romaine has issued a State of Emergency in the Town of Brookhaven effective 9:00 am today, January 23.

He also calls for all vehicles, except for essential emergency vehicles, to be off the roads after 9:00 am today.

Vehicles that are parked in the street must be moved to driveways or be subject to towing at the owner’s expense. Any abandoned vehicles obstructing access for snowplows and emergency vehicles may also be removed by the Town.

Center Moriches Firefighters and EMS personnel will be on standby at the firehouse throughout the storm to handle any emergencies that might occur.

Firefighters ask everyone for your help when the storm is over, If you have a fire hydrant on your property or in front of your business please shovel a 3 foot clearing around it – this will allow firefighters to hook up their hoses and get water on the fire quickly… it can save your life !!
