On Friday at 4:35pm Center Moriches Firefighters were requested to assist the Brookhaven Fire Department at the scene of a house fire on Heston Road in Shirley.

Brookhaven Fire Department was dispatched to the house fire on Heston Road at 4:26pm after numerous 911 calls reported smoke from the windows. Brookhaven Chief arrived on scene to find the basement of the Shirley house heavily involved in fire.

CMFD was requested to stand-by at the Heston Road fire with its "Rapid Intervention" team. The Rapid Intervention Team or "RIT" teams sole responsibility is to rescue fellow firefighters who become lost, trapped, disoriented or injured at the scene of the fire.

Approximately 75 firefighters from 7 departments responded to the fire and were on scene for about two hours before they brought the fire under control.

The residents who were home at the time of the fire escaped without injury. There were no firefighter injuries and the cause of the fire is under investigation by the Suffolk County Police Arson Squad and the Brookhaven Town Fire Marshalls Office.

Center Moriches firefighters were back in service 3 hours later.
