| Firefighters from the Center Moriches Fire Department were on scene assisting the Brookhaven Fire Department with a massive mulch fire at the Long Island Composting Facility on Horseblock Road. Flames broke out at LI Compost around 2:40 in the morning on Monday.
Making it difficult for the firefighters was the lack of fire hydrants in the immediate area. Tankers trucks with water had to be brought in to help supply water for the fire. Center Moriches Fire Fighters were called at 3:15am to respond to the scene with their tanker, and were released at 11:00 in the morning.
The fire burned approximately 200-foot-by-400-foot area of compost materials. The materials, included logs, tree stumps and tree limbs that were piled more than 50 feet high. At one point the flames from the burning pile shot more than 50 feet above the pile into the sky.
A total of 20 fire departments, 150 firefighters and three EMS agencies were called to the scene. There were no injuries reported and the cause of the fire is under investigation. |
