A Mastic man is under arrest for making 31 false 911 calls over the past three weeks, and Suffolk County police believe he is responsible for up to 300 more phony phone calls.
During this 3 week period the Center Moriches Fire Department had over a dozen of these calls for help, all of them turning out to be false alarms. These bogus calls included people being struck by cars, a car fire, and assault victims. These calls were scattered throughout different locations within Center Moriches.
The stream of fake emergency calls to 911 began on August 31. Police say Michael Salino, 37, of Mastic, used two cell phones to make the phony calls.
Investigators from the Seventh Precinct Crime Section arrested Salino on Monday at about 5:25 p.m. near William Floyd Parkway and McGraw Street in Shirley.
Salino was charged with six counts of falsely reporting an incident in the second degree and 25 counts of falsely reporting an incident in the third degree. The charges are felonies and misdemeanors, respectively.
Police say aside from the 31 calls he was charged with, Salino may have placed as many as 300 phony emergency calls. The investigation is ongoing.
