Hurricane Sandy, The Aftermath...

By Ex Chief Bill Renzetti
October 30, 2012

At 3pm on Monday October 29th the Center Moriches Fire Department went on a department wide standby for Hurricane Sandy.

During that time, the Center Moriches Firefighters responded to over 25 calls as Hurricane Sandy brought hurricane force winds and rain to the area.

Firefighters also assisted with clearing down trees from the roadway and reporting downed power lines in the community.

Areas of Center Moriches especially south of Montauk Highway were hit hard with severe flooding while areas north of Montauk Highway received minimal damage.

At the height of the storm LIPA reported over 920,000 customers across Long Island without power. Currently just over 7,600 Center Moriches customers are without power.

Some important safety tips to remember after the storm

• If you evacuated, return home only when officials say it is safe.
• Inspect your home for damage. Take pictures of damage, both of the building and its contents, for insurance purposes.
• Use flashlights in the dark. Do NOT use candles.
• Check refrigerated food for spoilage. If in doubt, throw it out.
• Wear protective clothing and be cautious when cleaning up to avoid injury.
• A generator should only be used outside on stable ground and away from any windows and vents to prevent deadly fumes from entering the home through an opening.
• Never fill the generator with fuel while it is running or still hot, and don't store gasoline in your home.
• Never touch or go near any downed wire – assume any downed wire is a live electric wire and report it to the authorities immediately
