Firefighters from 5 Fire Departments and 2 EMS agencies braved frigid temperatures and icy conditions Thursday morning to battle a fire that destroyed a house on Montauk Hwy in Moriches.

The fire broke out just after 5am. When Mastic firefighters arrived on scene they had heavy fire showing thorough the windows of the two story home.

Center Moriches Firefighters were called to assist Mastic Firefighters at 5:19am, once on scene CM firefighters went right to work battling the flames.

The Fire burned through the roof causing parts of it to collapse. Fearing additional sections of the house would also collapse firefighters had to fight the fire from the exterior.

It took firefighters 2 hours to bring the fire under control. At the time of the fire, temperatures outside were a bone chilling 5 degrees causing the water used by firefighters to instantly freeze.

The residents who were home at the time of the fire escaped without injury. There were no firefighter injuries and the cause of the fire is under investigation by the Brookhaven Town Fire Marshalls Office.

Center Moriches firefighters were back in service 3 hours later.
