At 9:34am the Center Moriches Fire Department was requested to assist the Mastic FD at the scene of a house fire on Maple Avenue in Shirley.

Mastic Firefighters got the call at 9:26am for smoke in the house on Maple Ave. When Mastic firefighters arrived on scene they were confronted with heavy smoke and fire from the house.

CMFD was requested to stand-by at the Maple Ave fire with its "Rapid Intervention" team. The Rapid Intervention Team or "RIT" teams sole responsibility is to rescue fellow firefighters who become lost, trapped, disoriented or injured at the scene of the fire.

Approximately 75 firefighters from 6 departments responded to the fire and were on scene for about two hours before they were released back into service
