Just after midnight Center Moriches Firefighters were requested to assist the Mastic Fire Department at the scene of a structure fire on Montauk Highway between Fulton Avenue & Oakland Avenue.

It was 11:59pm when the Mastic Fire Department was dispatched to the house fire on Montauk Hwy. When the Mastic Fire Chief arrived on scene he found a 2 story boarded up house with heavy fire from the second floor and immediately called for additional departments to assist at the fire.

While doing a size up of the house, the Mastic Chief could hear screams coming from the first floor.

Assisted by Suffolk County Police officers and civilians the Mastic Fire Chief was able to successfully rescue the person trapped inside the burning building. The unidentified man suffered severe burns to his hands and face and was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital by a Suffolk County Police Helicopter.

Center Moriches Firefighters responded to the scene with an engine and assisted the Mastic Firefighters with extinguishing and overhaul operations.

There were no other injuries reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Brookhaven Town Fire Marshal’s office and the Suffolk County Police Arson Squad.

Center Moriches Firefighters were back in service within 2 hours.
