Sunday morning members of the Center Moriches FD Water Rescue Team took to the water to practice their throw bag skills.

Throw bags may seem like simple pieces of rescue equipment, but for someone who has fallen in the water, they are a lifeline.

Firefighters reviewed how to safely work in and around the water, then the water rescue team simulated the rescue of someone who had fallen off the Union Ave Dock into the bay.

Water Rescue calls are low frequency, high risk calls. These type of rescues may account for less than one percent of the calls the fire department answers, but they are also some of the most dangerous.

Continued training helps improve their skills and gain confidence in themselves as well as the team.
