On Tuesday afternoon a swimmer was reported in distress at Smithpoint County Park prompting the quick response of the Moriches Bay Marine Incident Response Team and the Suffolk County Police Aviation and Marine Unit.

The search began immediately with lifeguards and emergency personnel scouring the waters of the Atlantic Ocean for any signs of the missing swimmer.

The team conducted a thorough search of the area for an hour before being released. Suffolk County Police will continue to patrol the area while detectives investigate the incident.
