Ice Safety Reminder from the Center Moriches Fire Department

With winter settling in, remember: NO ICE IS SAFE ICE.

Many of our area ponds, creeks, and even parts of Moriches Bay are frozen. They may look solid, but conditions can change quickly and become dangerous without warning.

Why Ice Is Never 100% Safe:

β€’ Ice thickness can vary from one step to the next
β€’ Snow can hide weak or thin spots
β€’ Moving water and temperature swings weaken ice fast
β€’ One fall through the ice can become life-threatening in seconds

If Someone Falls Through:
πŸ‘‰ Call 9-1-1 immediately
πŸ‘‰ Do NOT go onto the ice
πŸ‘‰ From shore, throw something that floats or a long object they can grab
πŸ‘‰ Keep eyes on the person and guide rescuers to their exact location

Cold water can overwhelm anyone in minutes.
Always supervise children and pets closely around frozen water.

Stay safe, Center Moriches - we’re always here to protect our community.
