| At 6:10pm, the Center Moriches Fire Department was dispatched to a residential structure fire on Rail Road Avenue. The first chief to arrive on scene reported heavy smoke coming from the residence.
Firefighters made their way through the smoky house and found that the fire in the fireplace had extended into the wall around the fireplace and burned up to the ceiling. Fortunately the homeowner discovered the fire before it had a chance to spread to the rest of the structure. Firefighters were able to quickly knock the fire down and confine it to the chimney area.
There were no injuries reported, firefighters were on scene about an hour. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Brookhaven Town Fire Marshalls Office. |
