January 27, 2014

At 1:11pm on Monday, Center Moriches Fire Department was requested to an accident involving a LIRR Train and a pedestrian on the tracks just east of the Cedar Lodge Nursing Home on Frowein Road.

The teen was walking east on the tracks just after 1pm as a Montauk train going in the same direction approached at approximately 60 mph. The 16-year-old who was wearing headphones didn't realize the train was coming.

The train was several hundred yards away when the LIRR crew first saw the teen on the tracks. The engineer sounded his horn but the teen apparently did not hear the warning.

As the train was being brought to an emergency stop, the teen appeared to become aware of the train but could not get out of the way in time.

Center Moriches Fire Chief Ron Primus said the teen landed about 15 feet down from the tracks and was able to talk to rescuers. "He was in a ravine off the side of the tracks," he said. "He was alert and conscious. He's very, very lucky."

Center Moriches EMT’s & Paramedic’s worked to stabilize the teen who was airlifted by Suffolk County Police helicopter to Stony Brook University Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The incident is under investigation by the MTA Police Detective Squad.
