| Just before 6:00 PM on Wednesday, the Mastic Beach Fire Department, along with the Marine Incident Response Team, was activated for a report of a possible person in the water in the Atlantic Ocean near the Smith Point Beach pavilion.
A call to 911 reported seeing a man fishing in waist-deep water before he suddenly disappeared from sight.
As Mastic Beach Fire Department members searched the shoreline, marine units from Mastic, Center Moriches, East Moriches and Eastport Fire Departments launched boats and began searching the rough waters off Smithpoint.
Fire Department marine units conducted an intensive search of the area for more than an hour, assisted by a Suffolk County Police Department helicopter and Marine Bureau. Despite extensive efforts, no one was located.
The search was ultimately called off after officials were unable to confirm that anyone had actually entered the water. |
