| This year’s Fire Prevention Week theme is “Charge Into Fire Safety: Safe Charging Is a Superpower.”
Lithium-ion batteries power many of the devices we use every day, including cell phones, laptops, tablets, power tools, e-bikes and scooters. With a few simple habits, you can help reduce the risk of a battery-related fire in your home.
🔋 Charge Into Safety: • Use the charger and cord supplied with your device or approved by the manufacturer. • Charge devices on a hard, flat surface, never on beds, couches or pillows. • Keep charging devices away from combustible materials and exits. • Unplug devices when they are fully charged. • Never use batteries or devices that are swollen, damaged, leaking, unusually hot, giving off an odor, smoking or making unusual noises. • When purchasing batteries, chargers and devices, look for products that have been tested and listed by a recognized safety organization such as UL. • Recycle lithium-ion batteries properly. Never place them in household trash.
Fire prevention doesn’t stop with batteries. Take time this week to test your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors, review your family’s escape plan, and make sure everyone knows your meeting place outside.
And don’t forget to join us for the Center Moriches Fire Department Open House on October 18 from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Come meet your local firefighters, see the apparatus, learn more about fire safety and enjoy a day with your fire department.
Protect your home. Protect your family. Charge into fire safety. 🔥 |
